12/02/2025A design story - Oznaka d.o.o. for Porto Montenegro
Porto Montenegro’s new Boka Place quarter and the SIRO hotel bring contemporary Adriatic living to the Bay of Kotor. A place where waterfront luxury, wellness and active-lifestyle hospitality meet intense daily movement of guests, residents and crews. Clear, beautiful signage is essential in such a layered environment: it tells the story of place, reduces friction for visitors, and protects the premium experience the developers intend.
Oznaka d.o.o., a signage and wayfinding specialist with decades of hospitality experience, was selected to deliver a complete signage program: from concept and planning through production and installation. Their portfolio and company materials emphasise end-to-end wayfinding services for sophisticated, long-lasting installations, and include hotel projects and testimonials that highlight hospitality work across the region.
A few years ago we were invited to collaborate on the development of the branding for the newly emerging hotel brand SIRO, owned by the Kerzner hospitality chain.
We are very proud of this project as it combines several different segments. On one side is the aforementioned new hotel brand, on the other hand are the hotel-run apartments and owner-occupied apartments. All within the framework of six buildings, a two-story garage and a shopping center. It was a big challenge to clearly separate all these different units and to still maintain a common thread. Well planed signage and wayfinding in such environment is crucial for satisfaction and well-being of the guests and visitors.
And in the end, customer satisfaction is what matters most to us.
Project goals for BOKA PLACE & SIRO HOTEL
- Create a consistent visual language that ties Boka Place’s new urban quarter and SIRO’s wellness-driven hotel into Porto Montenegro’s overall brand while remaining legible at street and marina scales.
- Make navigation effortless for diverse users: residents, hotel guests, delivery crews, marina users and event visitors.
- Respect architecture and landscape — materials, finishes and mounting solutions had to suit seaside exposure and the Mediterranean palette.
- Deliver accessibility and durability: tactile signage, appropriate contrast, weatherproof materials and easy maintenance.
Design approach for BOKA PLACE & SIRO HOTEL
Oznaka’s method combined strategic wayfinding analysis with hospitality-first aesthetics:
- Audit & user journeys. Map the typical flows (arrivals by car / yacht, check-in, fitness and spa areas, restaurants, residential entries) and identify decision points where signage must act quickly.
- Hierarchy & messaging. Large, bold markers for primary arrival points; secondary directional signs for pedestrian circulation; subtle, branded signage for terraces and leisure spaces.
- Material choices. Corrosion-resistant metals, anodised aluminium, engineered stone panels and laminated composites selected for longevity in a marine environment, all in tones complementary to Boka Place façades.
- Legibility & accessibility. Type sizes and contrast ratios chosen to meet or exceed hospitality wayfinding recommendations; tactile and Braille elements incorporated for guest-facing signs.
- Integration with architecture. Custom mounting and recessing so signs sit as part of the building fabric rather than as afterthoughts. This respects both Boka Place’s elevated plazas and SIRO’s courtyard and rooftop spaces.
Signature elements delivered
- Gateway & arrival monuments. Bold, low-sitting wayfinding monuments aligned to vehicular approaches and marina piers to welcome guests and orient them visually from the water.
- Marina & dock signage. Directional markers sized for visibility from tender/dock approaches and for people on foot visiting berths and waterfront venues.
- Hotel wayfinding system (SIRO). Clear zoning (reception, fitness, pool, spa, meeting rooms) with a calm, fitness-forward graphic language that mirrors SIRO’s brand promise of “better living.”
- Residential & lifestyle signage (Boka Place). Discreet building ID signage and pedestrian-scale directories for the neighbourhood’s central square, wellness areas and shops.
- Digital & flexible components. Where event-driven change is frequent (pop-ups, special events, marina scheduling), Oznaka supplied inset frames and modular panels so content can be updated without replacing the whole sign.
- Lighting & finishes. Integrated low-glare backlighting for evening legibility and subtle uplights for architectural monuments that emphasize texture rather than overpower the streetscape.
Wayfinding rationale — blending beauty with function
Effective hospitality signage borrows from urban placemaking and from rigorous wayfinding science. At Porto Montenegro the challenge is multi-scalar: a guest arriving by superyacht must be able to find hotel check-in as easily as a resident finding a specific block. Successful wayfinding reduces stress and increases dwell-time in retail and F&B areas, a direct economic benefit for the precinct. Oznaka’s approach follows these principles and adapts them to local materials, climate and the brand’s design language.
Impact & client response
Initial feedback, from operational teams and early guests, highlights easier navigation around the hotel and public spaces, fewer reception inquiries about directions, and a stronger sense of place in Boka Place’s new public square. Oznaka’s brochure and client testimonials underline their hospitality experience and the repeat business they’ve won on similar projects.
Signage at Boka Place and SIRO is more than directional hardware. It’s a design layer that protects the guest experience, enhances brand clarity, and works quietly day and night to make Porto Montenegro’s newest neighbourhood feel welcoming and effortless. Oznaka d.o.o.’s integrated approach - from strategy and user journeys to durable production and neat installation. Demonstrates how thoughtful wayfinding becomes a visible part of place-making in high-end marina and hotel environments.
